NICARAGUA - DAY 5: "NO DANCIN' ON THE SCAFFOLDING"

... yesterday i took a break, hence the single picture journal entry ... was nice to get a full night's sleep ... here're a few more shots from our visit to the waterfall ... diana seemed a bit contemplative while brian, our driver, gave the place his official "thumbs up" approval ...

... the "gang of 4" looked like they were planning some sort of fraternity prank ... by himself nestor seemed happy just enjoying the natural beauty of this marvelous place ...

... "wonder woman" kara totally destroyed the dirt masher ...

... apparently an interpretation was made that the rigid "no dancin' on the scaffolding" rule didn't apply to dancing on the subfloor ...

... "uh-huh, uh-huh" didn't seem to much impress the jonster ...

... linda seems to be planning what part of the little house will be her space ...

... one of the neighborhood kids was fascinated by all our activity ...

... he decided to take a little stroll to investigate ... his mother called and called, but finally had to chase him down ... it was interesting to see that when she caught up with him the first thing she did was straighten his socks and make sure his shoes were tied ...

... this one i'm submitting for a toothpaste ad ...

... the family's original abode was torn down to build the new one ... they're currently living in this little structure located only a dozen feet or so behind the construction site ... i think this is pretty much what their former house looked like ...

... marcos and i busted a few moves together ...

... this was the day for packing down the dirt that constitutes the subfloor ...

... the tampers each weigh about forty-pounds ...

... hamilton claims that he hurt his arm skipping stones in the waterfall's lagoon yesterday, but i've a feeling he just doesn't want to 'fess up to getting arm-wrestling whooped by a girl ...

... austin attacked the task like a giant piston ...

... i thought his name was jeff, but it turns out that the "jefe" on his nametag means "bossman" ... mariano is a master of every single skill used on the site, and is also a real gentleman ...

... his name begins with "d," i think he's the lead construction engineer ... it's absolutely amazing the amount of planning that went into this little house ...

Well captain said to John Henry
"What is that storm I hear?"
John Henry said, "That
ain't no storm captain
That's just my hammer
in the air, Lord, Lord
That's just my hammer in the air
THE BALLAD OF JOHN HENRY

... no such thing as "man's work" on this job site ...

... taking turns, the crew choreographed the work into rather fascinating ballet ...

... the preparing of the subfloor was perhaps the hardest physical work the others in our group have done ... (i say that because i avoided doing any of the dirt smashing, knowing that even a single round of it would undo all the healing my shoulder has done since last fall) ... after lunch their exhaustion was clearly apparent ...

... austin collapsed on the front porch ...

... it happened so fast, i'm thinking these three teleported themselves from the lunch table ...

... kara looked like one of those unfortunate citizens of pompeii ...

... he demonstrated his clever little scale, tomorrow he's bringing us the fresh watermelon and pineapple i ordered ...

... today i spent $400 buying ice cream sandwiches and cones for 18 people ... !!! ... okay, so that converts out to about US$14, but it sure does feel way cool saying it ...

... today i spent $400 buying ice cream sandwiches and cones for 18 people ...

... yup, way-way cool ...

... we ended the day enjoying supper at what i'm thinking was the local equivalent of a four-star steak house ... i had a perfectly cooked and presented angus beef loin cut that was one of the finest pieces of cow i've ever eaten ...

... tomorrow we finish our work ...
