SEEIN' THE SEA SMOKE

... john and chad and i left waterville at 4:30am so that we could photograph sunrise from rockland's famous "granite breakwater" ... braving -15°f air we set up our tripods in the dark and awaited the light ...

... 4,000 feet from the camera, the lighthouse's beacon is barely visible through the crystalline sea smoke ...

... toes frozen, i was first to head back to the car ... chad followed, while john was the last of us to make the long walk back to the mainland ...

... using my ancient nikkor 300mm manual lens, from the bluff near the parking lot i managed to capture a rather moody image of the breakwater lighthouse ...

... and i was quite surprised to see owls head lighthouse peeking out beyond deep cove ...

... a heavy bank of clouds along the eastern horizon delayed the sunrise ...

... in rockport harbor we found several sailing ships moored for the winter ... when he was much younger john crewed on one of these vessels ...

... was me, i'd fly south for the winter ...

... chad, seeking the perfect angle ...

... if they could, can you imagine the tales these anchors could tell ...

... it's seriously cold when even the salt water sea freezes ...

... i'm not sure, but i think this is my blue jeans ...

... curtis island, with it's quintessential lighthouse ...

... chad, who uses a most unique color palette ...

... we enjoyed breakfast at tracis diner in belfast, good food at reasonable prices ... i took a snapshot of john as he repeated my order of what turned out to be scrumptiously delicious salmon and eggs with hashbrowns and toast ...

... sea smoke with friends, a most perfect morning ...
