... "in 2008, madison county [ohio], which spans interstates 70 and 71 ... was cited by the ohio state highway patrol as leading the state for the most number of speeding tickets in excess of 20-mph over the posted limit ... despite a population of around 4,200 ... over 7,700 such tickets were issued in three years" [wikipedia] ... i wonder if this is another way of saying that madison county is a speed trap ... you'd think ticket revenue alone would be enough to keep the courthouse looking so nice, but it seems that in the state of ohio towns are allowed to collect "income tax," and the city of london, in which the courthouse is located, has it's own 1% income tax ... whew, and i thought maine allowing towns to charge excise tax on vehicles was bad ...
... but it's nice and quiet inside the courthouse, and i kind of like the idea of being given a promotion when i go to the rest room ... the swinging doors, they're a really nice touch ...
... i've got to wonder, however, about the thought process behind the choice of paintings used to decorate the men's room ... perhaps it's midwest thing ... i wonder if there's a painting of a bull on the wall of the "ladies" room ...
... 1000 miles since i left waterville on saturday ... this afternoon i drove back roads from columbus to cincinnati ... it was quite warm out, so i wore my jacket with all the vents wide open ... just outside of xenia the sky turned black and i put on all my weather gear, but i got lucky and the heavy rain stayed several miles to the north ... it was a very, very windy day, flags straight out and making snapping sounds would indicate a strong 24-32 mile-per-hour breeze ...
... it took three hours for me to drive 110 miles, mostly because of the frequent stops during which i would just stand along the side of the road and look at ohio ...
... supper and carl and jane's was wonderful, and now i'm all tucked in ready to sleep on the sofa in my favorite basement hideaway ...
