LOOKIN' FOR A LEAD MINE

... out for a little wanderabout, is a given that that this sign would catch my eye ...

... as it would've been to pa, the road beyond was a temptation i couldn't resist, especially when i noticed the "closed in winter" placard ...

... on my first drive through the woods on the lead mine road i found nothing that provided evidence for the naming of the road ... af a bit of web research i found enough information at minedat.org to justify a return to the little orange bubble ...

... parking the car, i headed into the goodwin town forest ...

... despite the 85+°f heat, it was relatively cool in the shade of the tall pine trees ...

... at the edge of the forest along the sandy south shore of cooks pond i found the remains of what were clearly some sort of industrial buildings ...

... there were all sorts of clues that these structures had been of a very robust construction ...

... below this heavy wall is square about thirty-feet on a side ... it's filled with crushed rock that is clearly not from this area ...  this is what i believe was the shaft to the mine, my bet is that through this curved opening ran cables to some sort of hoisting machinery ...

... off to the side of the mine ... no evidence of either smoke or water, my thought is that this is some sort of air duct ...

... from the madison historical society, i'm pretty sure this is a photograph of the mine ...

... here's a list of the different minerals found in the mine ...

Albite - Anglesite - Aragonite - Arsenopyrite
Biotite - Calcite - Cerussite - Chalcopyrite
Danalite - Fluorite - Galena - Goethite - Greenockite - Helvine
Hematite - Hemimorphite - Hisingerite - Hornblende - Hydrozincite
Microcline - Minium - Muscovite - Pyrite - Pyromorphite
Quartz - Siderite - Smithsonite - Sphalerite - Titanite
Uranosilite - Uvite - Wulfenite

if i was a kid this would be enough to have me looking for a good flashlight and a pickaxe ... i mean, how could i resist this ...
