JON AND I GO FOR A SHORT RIDE

... saturday jon and i made a little day ride up to moxie falls ... along the way we stopped to visit the father rasle monument ...

... it was on this spot that father sebastien rale was murdered ... here, situated at the conflux of three great cultures, as he attempted to compile a french/abenaki dictionary he somehow managed to become the focus of the conflict between the french, english, and native americans ...

... we both enjoyed the serenity of this quiet spot along the banks of the kennebec river, and for me especially are a multitude of wonderful memories of treasured colleagues and i bringing many of my students here on day-long "historical outings" ...

... after the monument we motored on to moscow, where we stopped to see the great dam ... the sun was at the wrong angle for good pictures of the huge structure, so i turned to snap a picture of the local landscape ...

... twisting and turning our way up along 201, we made our way to the forks, then ascended to the parking lot where we left our bikes and hiked in to the falls ...

... for a moment forgetting, or, perhaps more accurately stated, disregarding the fact that my ol' knees aren't as reliable as they once were, i hopped over the fence to take some pictures "close up and personal" ...

... at almost ninety feet, moxie is one of the highest waterfalls in new england ...

... jon thoroughly enjoyed the view ...

... from every angle, a most memorable vista ...

... cool, clean mountain air, sun low in the west, from the mountains a ribbon of relatively empty tarmac all the way to the center of the state, the ride home was fabulous ...
